Classes

Invite us to your home, school, or other meeting place to conduct one of the following workshops for your group of high school students! Or sign up for our one-of-a-kind Online Journal Workshop. Want to change something or have an idea you'd like us to incorporate? Let us know. We can modify any class to better meet your needs. Even if you don't have a group of people, we will attempt to match you with a class that's forming. Just get in touch by emailing contact@essayjolt.com.

With the exception of the Online Journal Workshop, all classes meet in the following areas: all of New Jersey; New York City and Nassau, Westchester, and Rockland Counties; Philadelphia and Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks, Northampton, and Monroe Counties. However, if you live outside these areas and would like us to come to you, we would be happy to negotiate travel arrangements.


Preparing to Write the College Essay

We start by examining what works and what doesn't, and then engage in brainstorming exercises. Students will leave with the tools to uncover a unique and effective topic and the start to one of their essays.

Up to 6 students: $70. 7 students or more: $10/student. Limit 20 students. 1 hour, 30 minutes.

College Essay Workshop

This class is for students who have already written their essays. They'll get advice from one of our essay coaches and fellow students in an intimate and supportive discussion format. By examining the work of others, students will gain a more solid sense of what it takes to make their own piece shine.

$20/student. Minimum 3 students; maximum 5 students. Up to 3 hours, depending on the number of students.

Journal Workshop

Colleges are looking for students who are perceptive, creative, and fascinated by the world around them. This class is geared toward the sophomore or junior who would like to develop those traits (but is open to anyone in high school). Students will complete prompts designed to get them looking at the world with greater attention, and improve their ability to write with captivating detail and in an engaging style. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed—the better to get creative juices flowing!

$45/student. Minimum 6 students; maximum 20 students. 6 weekly 1-hour sessions.

Online Journal Workshop

This is an email version of the Journal Workshop above. The student will receive a fun exercise each week that will enhance creativity, self-knowledge, and observation skills. Along the way, he or she will become a better writer and a better thinker.
